I’ve used this title before on a BOS blog, but it’s very appropriate for this one. I’ve been spending time watching (and video taping) the AZL Cubs with first round draft pick Albert Almora and Cuban slugger Jorge Soler here in Mesa. Those two are certainly the big names on this Rookie League club, but there are many other Cubs draft picks getting their professional baseball start on this team.
This is a whole different level of minor league baseball, games are the same nine innings, but there is a lot of roster movement as players tend to move up the minor league ladder quickly. They don’t charge to watch these games, no concession stands open, no P.A. announcer – just baseball. And it’s summer in the valley of the sun, so it’s HOT! They even have water misters in the dugouts at Hohokam to keep the players cool on evenings where the temps can be 100 plus degrees.
I know a lot of you have been anxious to see these young guys in action, especially Jorge Soler as there doesn’t seem to be much video of him on the net, since he recently defected from Cuba. So I put this 7 minute 30 second show together, it contains an exclusive interview with Albert Almora and also shows Soler’s first HR in the Cubs system (in his second game), and Almora’s first HR (in his first pro game). This is not the shaky video you may have seen on the internet, but video I shot, that has not yet been seen.
So check out some of these young Cubs in this exclusive BOS video, and pass it along to all your friends who are Cubs fans. The future is here!
