The Cubs ended up with a nine inning 1-1 tie against the Cleveland Indians yesterday in front of 15,388 fans at Sloan Park. A tie game with no extra innings, such is the nature of spring training. Especially in early spring where pitchers are on strict pitch counts as they build up their arms.
A few notes from the game. Javy Baez apparently is in mid-season defensive form. Javy made an amazing play on a Chris Colabello hard grounder which he snared practically in short left-centerfield, then threw from his knee getting the Colabello at first. Javy also had, what I refer to as the “barbed beast bat” in his bag. Can you say intimidation!
Cubs top prospect Eloy Jimenez got the start in LF batting clean-up. He was 1-2 with a sharp single in his first at-bat. Eight Cubs pitchers saw action and allowed the Indians only three hits on the game. None of the Cubs pitchers threw more than 2 innings.
Cubs play the White Sox today at Sloan Park, game time 1:05 pm AZ time. Here are John Antonoff’s photos from yesterday.
