Harry Caray has been gone 10 years now but is still a much loved Cubs icon, today is Harry’s birthday. He was born Harry Carabina on March 1 st 1914, their is some discrepancy to the actual year but 1914 is generally accepted. Born the same year Wrigley Field was built Harry broadcast over 8,300 games in his 53-year career in the big leagues and was inducted in 1989 into the Broadcasting wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
I interviewed Harry’s best friend Pete Vonachen for the Boys of Spring documentary a couple years back, here is a small clip of video from that interview (clip is just over 3 minutes long). Harry and Pete were friends for 48 years at the time Harry passed away…these two guys had some wild times together. Harry lived one heck of a great life by his own account and this quote from him tells a bit about his outlook – “Booze, broads, and bullshit. If you got all that, what else do you need?”
Happy Birthday Harry!
