Happy 100th Birthday Wrigley Field!

By Tim Sheridan
April 23, 2014

A great week so far! Monday we saw the Travis Wood show in a 5-1 win over the DBacks, then the Cubs turned up the Olt-age in a 9-2 win last night, and today it’s – Happy Birthday to Wrigley Field! One hundred years, that’s quite an accomplishment indeed.

It was April 23, 1914, Weegham Park hosted its first game as the Chi-Feds played the Kansas City Packers. On that day a century ago, 21,000 fans filled the new ballpark at Clark and Addison Streets. And soon, this same ballpark will host the Cubs in the greatest World Series winning celebration ever! I don’t know how that last sentence got onto the blog, I did not write it, must have been my overly optimistic alter-ego. At any rate, here’s to Wrigley Field and one hundred amazing years.

I’ve enjoyed many awesome times at Wrigley, and a few I’d rather forget. However, it’s all part of the tapestry of this beautiful ballpark. Wrigley is such an amazing place that movies have been filmed there, books have been written about it, and it’s legends abound. Speaking of books written about Wrigley Field, I had the chance to talk recently with Cubs fan and author George F. Will about his new book – A Nice Little Place On The North Side. The book is a great read, and tribute to the venerable ballpark, Will also dives into many areas of Wrigley’s past that are not as well known. Here’s a video of my chat with George Will.
