Cubs 2009 1st round draft pick Brett Jackson steps out of the cage

Congratulations to former Cub Keith Moreland who was named as the new analyst/color commentator for WGN radio today. Moreland said “Nobody can replace Ron Santo, he’s irreplaceable. All I can do is keep the seat warm and do the best I can to be me”.

With consummate pro Pat Hughes in the seat next to him, Zonk will do just fine. The new duo will be on the air calling their first Cubs on February 27th from Hohokam Park.

Here are a few photos from today and a some thoughts to go along.

With so many young arms in camp Jay Jackson is a 23 year old pitcher who is flying a bit under the radar this spring. Jackson has racked up 334 innings in three minor league season’s and has pitched competently at every level, he won 11 games last year at AAA Iowa.

Great to see Kerry Wood showing fellow Texas native Andrew Cashner a few pointers on baseball grip techniques. Their conversation lasted only a minute or two and happened as they were moving from one field to another, it was one of those subtle things that often get missed if you’re not in the right spot to see it. Wood is a team leader and in spite of his unfortunate injury history, there’s a lot he can show the younger players.
